Getting Started

Up and running in under five minutes.

WordSprout has four steps: create a list, build a class, share a code, and let students practice. No student accounts, no app installs for teachers, no spreadsheets.

The four steps

From first login to first practice session.

Step 01

Create a word list

Log in and open the Lists tab. Give your list a name, then add your spelling words. You can type them one at a time or paste a batch. Each word can optionally include a part of speech, definition, or example sentence — but the word itself is all that's required.

Step 02

Build a class and publish

Open the Classes tab and create a class. Add the lists you want students to practice. When you're ready, publish — WordSprout generates a 6-character join code and a QR code for your class. That's the only thing families need.

Step 03

Share the code

Display the QR code on your projector, paste the join code into your newsletter, or print the share card from the class detail page. There's no student account required — just scan or type, and the lists load on the device.

Step 04

Students practice on iOS

Once a family enters the code, the app imports your word lists and works entirely offline. Students can practice anytime — spelling tests, definitions, or just reviewing the words. Nothing is sent back to your account.

What you need

The short list.

For teachers

  • A WordSprout account — free to start, no card required
  • A web browser — the portal works on any desktop or laptop
  • Your spelling words

For families

  • An iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later
  • The WordSprout app (free download from the App Store)
  • The join code or QR code from the teacher
Quick answers

Things people ask in the first five minutes.

Do students need an account?

No. Students never create an account, enter a password, or give WordSprout any personal information. The join code is the only credential.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. Once a student has entered a join code and the lists have loaded, the app works entirely offline. No internet connection is needed to practice.

Can I update a list after sharing?

Yes. Edit the list in the portal and republish — existing join codes will reflect the updated content the next time the app syncs.

How many classes and lists can I create?

The free plan includes up to 5 active word lists — no time limit, no card required. The Teacher plan ($5.99/mo) removes that cap entirely: unlimited lists, classes, and words.
